At the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Structural Chemistry, Prof. Mike H. Whangbo from North Carolina State University, USA, visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) on May 14, 2010. During his stay, Prof. Whangbo delivered a seminar report entitled “Density functional study of magnetic solids: Spin exchange interactions and magnetic properties” and carried out detailed discussion with the research staff of FJIRSM.

Prof. Mike H. Whangbo is an internationally well-known theoretical chemist and the author of quantum chemistry softwares of CAESAR and SAMOA. At present, Prof. Whangbo is a professor with North Carolina State University, USA, and meanwhile he is the member of the editorial boards of the scientific journals ofSolid State Sciences and Materials Research Bulletin. His current research interest is magnetic structures and spin exchange interactions of extended magnetic solids in terms of spin dimer analysis and first principles electronic structure calculations. Until the year of 2009, Prof. Whangbo had earned 8 international academic awards, published 3 monographs, 8 special chapters and 496 research papers including 3 in Science, 6 in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 24 in Phys. Rev. B. and 47 in J. Am. Chem. Soc.
